The Charm of Abrash

abrash

Rugs made with naturally dyed wool often display a beautiful characteristic known as abrash. The word comes from the Persian and Turkish term for a variation in color, and it describes the subtle shifts in tone that appear within a single shade across the surface of a rug.

Abrash happens because natural dyeing is an organic, hands-on process. Wool is typically dyed in small batches using plant, root, or insect-based pigments, and no two batches ever come out exactly the same. Differences in the water, the temperature, the length of time the yarn soaks, and the natural variation between individual fleeces all influence how the color takes. When a weaver runs out of one batch and continues with another, the new yarn will be a slightly different tone. The result is a soft, horizontal banding or gentle wash of lighter and darker areas, much like brushstrokes in a painting.

Rather than being a flaw, abrash is a hallmark of authenticity and craftsmanship. It tells you the rug was made by hand, with real dyes, in small lots, rather than produced with the uniform consistency of synthetic dyes or machine production. Over time, abrash has come to be cherished as a lovely surprise: it adds depth, movement, and character, making every rug truly one of a kind.23036 hand-woven Denizli wool kilim, 210 x 300 cm
