Morocco

Weaving in Morocco is as ancient as it is anywhere, dating back at least 2,000 years. With a distinct geography comes a very distinct character of rugs, in both design and structure. Thick wool, simple looms and a domestic tradition built for warmth rather than fine detail produce rugs of lower knot density, plush, soft and pliable underfoot. Moroccan rugs offer an altogether distinct experience of rugs.

These rugs are woven by women at home, most often Amazigh women of the Atlas Mountains, without cartoons or fixed patterns. Each one is drawn from memory: the memory of a tribe, a mother, a hand. No two are alike.

What emerges is abstract and gestural. Diamonds, lozenges and lines wander across the field, break off, begin again. Simple geometry carries meaning, a language of protection, fertility and the passage of life, spoken in signs rather than words. Irregularity is not a flaw here but a signature, the trace of a living hand.

Where a classical carpet is composed and commanding, a Moroccan rug is casual: loose in its weave, free in its lines, unconcerned with perfection. Wherever one is laid, the space softens and opens, becoming airy.
